Setting up Managed Google Tags

Managed Google Tags lets Smart Cookie Popup load your Google tags and manage Google Consent Mode v2 for you. Turn it on only if you want this app, not Wix Marketing Integrations or Custom Code, to load Google Tag Manager or direct Google measurement IDs on your site. This feature is optional, so if you only want a cookie popup you can skip it.
What Managed Google Tags does
Loads your Google tags only after consent is handled correctly
Manages Google Consent Mode v2 for you automatically
Works with Google Tag Manager, direct Google tag IDs, or both
When to use it
Use Managed Google Tags if you want this app to be the single place that loads your Google tags. Leave it off if you do not use Google tags, or if you prefer to manage them somewhere else.
Where to find it
Open Smart Cookie Popup from your dashboard.
Go to the Design tab.
Scroll to Managed Google Tags.
Check Enable managed Google tags to open the 3-step setup guide.
You will see a status badge next to the feature: Not enabled, Setup incomplete, or Ready. Remember to click Save Changes and activate so your settings go live.
Step 1: Add the Google IDs this app should load
Add the IDs you want this app to load. You can use a Google Tag Manager container, direct Google tag IDs, or both.
Google Tag Manager ID (optional): one container in the format GTM-XXXXXXX.
Direct Google tag IDs (optional): one per line. Use G- for GA4, AW- for Google Ads, and DC- for Floodlight.
You need at least one valid ID (a GTM container, one or more direct IDs, or both).
Use GTM if your tags are managed in Google Tag Manager. Use direct IDs if you load GA4, Google Ads, or Floodlight without GTM. If you leave GTM empty, only your direct tags will load.
Warning: If you use both GTM and direct IDs, make sure the direct IDs do not also fire from inside your GTM container. Loading the same ID in two places can count your visits and conversions twice.
Step 2: Check for duplicate Google installs
Make sure these Google IDs are not already installed anywhere else on this site. Many sites have no Google tags installed yet, so if that is you, this step is quick. If you are not sure, check these places:
Wix Marketing Integrations: disconnect Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads, or related Google integrations that load the same IDs.
Settings, then Custom Code: remove any Google snippets for the same IDs.
Other apps, embedded HTML, or custom elements that may add Google scripts.
Why it matters: duplicate installs can make Consent Mode start too late, and your visits and conversions may be counted twice.
When you have checked, tick the box: I confirmed there are no duplicate Google installs for these IDs.
Step 3: Save and verify
Click Save Changes in the app and activate.
Visit your live site or a preview.
Accept cookies so the app loads your tags. Tags load after consent.
Verify your tags are firing.
To verify GTM, use GTM Preview mode. Avoid the basic Test your website option, because it often misses tags that load through a cookie consent app.
To verify direct GA4, Google Ads, or Floodlight tags, use Google Tag Assistant after you accept cookies.
When setup is complete you will see: Consent defaults will run before this app loads your Google tags. The status badge will change to Ready.
FAQ
Can I use both GTM and direct IDs?
Yes, but each Google ID should load in only one place. If the same ID fires both as a direct ID and from inside your GTM container, you may see double counting. Keep each ID in either GTM or the direct list.
What ID formats does the app accept?
Use GTM-XXXXXXX for a Google Tag Manager container, G- for GA4, AW- for Google Ads, and DC- for Floodlight. You need at least one valid ID, and you can add several direct IDs one per line.
Do I need Managed Google Tags if I only want a cookie popup?
No. Managed Google Tags is optional. If you only want a cookie consent popup, you can leave it off. Turn it on only if you want this app to load your Google tags and manage Consent Mode for you.
